The ankle is commonly injured during athletic activities, and ankle sprains account for a large percentage of sports injuries. Ankle sprains can occur in many service members and non-athletes as well. It is important to seek professional treatment for an ankle sprain, because an improperly healed ankle sprain may make recurrent ankle sprains more likely, which can lead to chronic ankle instability. If the ligament(s) that have been overly stretched in an ankle sprain remain loose, this is typically indicative of mechanical ankle instability. Functional ankle instability may be associated with weakness in the muscles, and deficits in the nervous and neuromuscular systems. If you have suffered one or more ankle sprains and your ankle feels painful, stiff, weak or wobbly, or gives out when standing or walking, it is wise to consult a podiatrist. They will perform a physical examination and may conduct imaging tests to diagnose chronic ankle instability and begin an appropriate treatment program.
Ankle pain can have many different causes and the pain may potentially be serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with one of our podiatrists from The Podiatry Center, PC. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.
Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.
Causes
The most common causes of ankle pain include:
Symptoms
Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.
Diagnosis
Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.
Treatment
Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.

The tarsal tunnel encases the tibial nerve, which is found in the ankle. It is surrounded by soft bone and tissue and can become damaged from consistent pressure. This condition is known as tarsal tunnel syndrome. It can be caused by existing medical conditions like flat feet, arthritis, diabetes, or from an ankle sprain. Patients can experience specific symptoms that include a burning sensation, shooting pain, or tingling. Diagnosis is made by performing Tinel’s test. This is accomplished by exerting pressure on the tibial nerve and observing if it produces pain. Relief may be found when the affected foot is elevated, and this may help to rest the foot and reduce swelling. In severe cases, surgery called the tarsal tunnel release may be a necessary option. This can be an effective method in relieving the nerve. If you have endured an ankle injury, and are experiencing pain, please consult with a podiatrist who can diagnose and treat tarsal tunnel syndrome.
Tarsal tunnel syndrome can be very uncomfortable to live with. If you are experiencing tarsal tunnel syndrome, contact one of our podiatrists of The Podiatry Center, PC. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
Tarsal tunnel syndrome, which can also be called tibial nerve dysfunction, is an uncommon condition of misfiring peripheral nerves in the foot. The tibial nerve is the peripheral nerve in the leg responsible for sensation and movement of the foot and calf muscles. In tarsal tunnel syndrome, the tibial nerve is damaged, causing problems with movement and feeling in the foot of the affected leg.
Common Cause of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
The Effects of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
A physical exam of the leg can help identify the presence of tarsal tunnel syndrome. Medical tests, such as a nerve biopsy, are also used to diagnose the condition. Patients may receive physical therapy and prescriptive medication. In extreme cases, some may require surgery.

Many people who have had diabetes for a long time may also have a condition known as diabetic neuropathy. The most common form is peripheral neuropathy, which in diabetics usually affects the feet. Symptoms include numbness, reduced ability to feel pain or temperature changes, and tingling or burning sensations. Sharp pains or cramps may also occur. These can further evolve into foot ulcers (wounds that do not heal properly) and infections from cracks or sores in the skin. If ignored or left untreated, gangrene may develop which could lead to surgery or amputation. The main causes of peripheral neuropathy are high levels of sugar and triglycerides in the blood which can damage the nerves and blood vessels in the feet. Since the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy develop over time, it is easy to overlook this condition. Daily foot care is imperative to maintain healthy feet. Another important way to prevent or handle diabetic neuropathy is to schedule regular visits to a podiatrist who can monitor the condition of your feet and treat them accordingly.

What Is Neuropathy?
Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.
Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:
Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.
Treatment
To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.
Pain medication may be issued for pain. Electrical nerve stimulation can be used to stimulate nerves. If the neuropathy is caused from pressure on the nerves, then surgery may be necessary.

The long bones of the foot that connect the heel and the toes are called metatarsals. When the rounded head of a metatarsal bone is under pressure, it can become inflamed and painful with every step you take. The two main causes of this type of pain, also termed metatarsalgia, are the foot hitting a hard surface when you walk or run and faulty biomechanics of the foot itself. In many cases, the activity you are undergoing, such as running or walking long distances, or the shoes your wear may be the culprit. Pounding on pavement over long periods can bruise the metatarsals. Wearing high heels with pointy toes puts extreme pressure on these bones. Other causes include foot deformities like bunions and hammertoes that can affect your gait, being overweight, stress fractures that change the distribution of weight, and high arches. If metatarsal pain has begun to interfere with your daily life, it is a good idea to consult a podiatrist for an examination, diagnosis and options for treatment.
