DNA samples from over 27,000 patients were used in a recent study at the Arthritis Research UK Epidemiology Unit at the University of Manchester. This study determined 14 more genes that may cause rheumatoid arthritis along with the 32 other genes already identified. The research was published in Nature and Genetics and also brought to light that the genes is linked to the X-chromosome, which could be an explanation for why more women suffer from rheumatoid arthritis.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a painful condition that requires medical attention. If you believe you are suffering from rheumatoid arthritis you should seek the care of a podiatrist such as Dr. Howard Hyman of The Podiatry Center, P.C. Dr. Hyman can diagnose foot conditions you may be suffering from as well as help you determine treatment options that are right for you.
What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system attacks the membranes surrounding the joints. Inflammation of the lining and eventually the destruction of the joint’s cartilage and bone occurs, causing severe pain and immobility.
Rheumatoid Arthritis of the Feet
Although RA usually attacks multiple bones and joints throughout the entire body, almost 90 percent of cases result in pain in the foot or ankle area.
Symptoms
- Swelling & pain in the feet
- Stiffness in the feet
- Pain on the ball or sole of feet
- Joint shift and deformation
Diagnosis
Quick diagnosis of RA in the feet is important so that the podiatrist can treat the area effectively. Your doctor will ask you about your medical history, occupation, and lifestyle to determine the origin of the condition. Rheumatoid Factor tests help to determine if someone is affected by the disease.
